This week, Google announced it suspended the updates for Huawei smartphones, amid the tensions between China and United States.
Also, Microsoft, who provides theoperating systemfor Huawei laptops and tablets,could follow suit.
Other American tech giants such as Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom, will no longer supply components to Huawei.
In spite of these bans, theoperating systemswill not stop working.The Windows 10 licenseon Huawei laptops and tablets will continue to be available to users.
Still, in these circumstances, Huawei will no longer obtain OEM (original equipment manufacturer) licenses from Microsoft. This means the situation remains complicated for future Huawei devices.
What are the chances of Huawei launching its on PC OS?
The Chinese company prepared itself for this (apparently) bleak scenario.
Richard Yu, the CEO of the consumer division from Huawei, made the following statement before the ban:
We have prepared our ownoperating system. Should it ever happen that we can no longer use these systems, we would be prepared. That’s our plan B. But of course we prefer to work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft.
We don’t know at what stage the development of a newoperating systemis and how it will affect or influence thehardwareof the Chinese company.
An efficient and secureoperating systemcould not be implemented in a day, probably not even in the future generation of devices. So, it is also possible that, as a “crisis solution”, Huawei could adopt an existent alternative to Windows, such asLinux.
No one knows exactly what the new ban will bring, but it is safe to say that Huawei was caught in the middle of the escalating trade tensions between China and the United States.
Also, the new ban caught Huawei somewhat prepared. They’ve been working on the new operating system(s) since 2012.
