Microsoft Edge Insider installers for Windows 10X emulator and HoloLens 2 are now available

Microsoft has quietly made its Edge Insider channels available on two additional platforms, the HoloLens 2 and the Windows 10X emulator. Installers for the Edge Beta, Dev and Canary channels are now available from theMicrosoft Edge Insider website(viaWindows Central), as you can see in the image below.

While Microsoft made it previously possible to try the new Microsoft Edge on the Windows 10X emulator earlier this year, testers can now install the Edge Beta, Dev, or Canary channels in the emulator on their own. However, it wasn’t possible to install the new Chromium-based Edge on HoloLens 2 headsets before, though the Legacy Edge worked fine.

Both Windows 10X and the HoloLens 2 OS are based on Windows Core OS (WCOS), a new modular version of Windows that doesn’t support legacy Win32 apps. “The MSIX version of the new Microsoft Edge, when installed on a WCOS product, operates via a SHIM that allows the legacy application to run as if it were a modern app, translating those legacy APIs and talking to the OS as if it were native,” Windows Central reported.

It’s been a while since we had any news about Windows 10X, thoughthe OS’ new out of box experiencewas recently discovered in a recent Windows 10 Insider build from October. The Windows 10X emulator and other development tools are still available onthis page.

Windows 10X was initially expected to make its debut this year on dual-screen devices such as Microsoft’s Surface Neo, but the company has since changed its plans delayed the device. According to previous reports,Windows 10X will now ship first on Chromebook-like deviceswhere web apps and the company’s new Edge browser should play a big role. Microsoft may also be working on the ability to stream legacy Win32 apps when necessary.
