Microsoft hires new CVP for expanding health-care vertical

Microsoft announced today that they have hired a new Corporate Vice President to supports it’s growing health-care vertical especially in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic.CNBC noted in today’s articlethat Tom McGuinness was brought in to support Microsoft’s relationships with the healthcare industry including large hospitals, health insurers, and life sciences companies.

The newly hired Corporate Vice President is a veteran of the industry previously serving as the president and CEO of GE Healthcare’s $10 billion imaging business, and who will initially play a key role in helping companies successfully get through the COVID-19 pandemic. As a company, Microsoft is aggressively deploying new services and offerings to help healthcare providers. Just last week, Microsoft made news by offering theirAccountGuard servicefor free for healthcare companies, and recently released aPower Platform solutionfor healthcare response.

With the hiring of Tom McGuinness, Microsoft has made another prominent hire in support of theirhealthcare businessand since 2019, the company has also hired other industry leaders including Google Cloud’s Greg More and Samsung’s Chief Medical Officer,David Rhew.While the major cloud providers have been competing for the business of healthcare companies in recent years, Microsoft’s strategy has been to strategically partner with them. Because of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft is also seeing increased demand for Azure by healthcare companies looking to use the cloud to better engage with their customers and patients remotely. Today, Azure’s largest healthcare customers include Humana, Novartis, and Walgreens.
