Microsoft had amuch-anticipated Surface event yesterdaywhen the company officially unveiled the Surface Go 3, a new Surface Laptop Studio, and the Surface Pro 8. Since the launch of the first Intel-based Surface Pro back in 2013, the 2-in-1 PCs have remained the most popular Surface devices and the Surface Pro 8 represents quite a big upgrade.
Dave Mitchell, General Manager in the Surface Program Management team gave an in-depth tour of the new tablet in a video published on the Microsoft Mechanics YouTube channel yesterday. The first thing you can see when you look at the Surface Pro 8 is that it has adopted the Surface Pro X design with its thinner bezels, and the redesigned Surface Pro Keyboard also comes with a pen storage emplacement to wirelessly charge the new Surface Slim Pen 2. However, what happened under the hood is probably what’s most interesting about the Surface Pro 8
Mitchell explains in the video that Microsoft has completely redesigned the internals of the Surface Pro 8 as well as the metal body that now uses recycled aluminum instead of magnesium. If the microSD port is gone, Microsoft has added two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports as well as a removable SSD that’s located under the kickstand, right alongside the Nano SIM tray for LTE variants of the Surface Pro 8.
The larger 13-inch PixelSense Flow touch display also works in conjunction with a new ambient color sensor that can adjust lighting intensity from 2 to 450 nits. This new display also supports Dolby Vision and up to 120Hz refresh rates, making ink latency almost imperceptible.
Below the display, the Surface Pro 8’s new design supports 11th Gen Intel Core processors with up to 23-watt TDP, and there’s a new carbon composite thermal dissipation system to keep the tablet cool in all circumstances The battery capacity has also been increased to 50.4 watt hours, and Microsoft promises up to 16 hours of typical device usage.
The Surface Pro 8 is alreadyavailable for pre-orderon the Microsoft Store, and it will start shipping on October 5. The base model with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage is priced at $1,099, and the most expensive configuration with an Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage will cost you $2,599. TheSurface Pro 8 for Business, which isn’t available for pre-order yet will also offer optional LTE as well asthe choice between Windows 11 Pro and Windows 10 Pro.
