Since Microsoft and Canonical, the leading company for providing services and support for Linux variation Ubuntu, began working together some months ago, they’ve been trying to make using .NET in Ubuntu easier. Now today,in a post on the .NET blog, Microsoft is announcing that .Net 6 is available on Ubuntu, and it can be installed with just one command, “apt install dotnet6.”

There are multiple packages available, and you can install the .NET6 SDK, ASP.NET Core, or the .NET Runtime all with simple apt commands. There are a few caveats, there’s no Arm64 support just yet, nor .NET7 builds, and .NET MAUI workloads aren’t supported on Linux.

Microsoft and Canonical have also worked together to introduce .NET in Chiseled Ubuntu Containers. Chiseling “delivers the smallest container footprint while still being the Ubuntu you know and trust.”

You can read more about .NET6 on Ubuntu and Chiseling with lots of detailin the blog post.

Do you use Ubuntu? Is .NET6 a welcome addition? let us know in the comments below.
