Microsoft is introducing a couple of redesigned File Explorer icons in theWindows 10 Insider build 21343, which is now available to download for Dev Channel Insiders. The company gave a fresh coat of paint to top-level user folders in File Explorer such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and Pictures, and even the Recycle Bin icon has also been refreshed in this build.

“We firstbegan updating the icons in Windows 10 last yearstarting with the built-in apps. Since then, we have continued updating icons throughout Windows 10 includingthe icon for Windows Security, the Narrator icon, and most recentlythe icon for Notepad. Now we’re taking the next step by updating many of the system icons used throughout File Explorer,” the Windows Insider team explained today.

A lot of Windows 10 icons are still waiting for an update, but what we’re seeing so far looks pretty good. “Several changes, such as the orientation of the folder icons and the default file type icons, have been made for greater consistency across Microsoft products that show files,” the team said today.

Please note that after upgrading to this build, any custom folders you’ve pinned to Quick Access will disappear. Before the team can fix this issue, insiders should either skip this build or make note of any custom folders before installing it.

This new build also brings minor improvements to Windows Sandbox and Microsoft Defender Application Guard, while News and Interests in the task bar will start rolling out to Insiders in China. You can also find below the list of other changes, bug fixes, and known issues for the build 21343:

Microsoft rumored to be working on a big design update for Windows 10 coming later this year with the “21H2” update, and we hope that these new File Explorer icons are a good taste of things to come. Microsoft’s Chief Hardware Officer Panos Panay recently said that 2021 wouldbe “a massive year” for Windows, and we’re really looking forward to see more design updates in upcoming Dev Channel builds.
